Police are trying to find out what lead to a 7-year-old boy being shot in northwest Atlanta on Sunday.

Atlanta police say they were called out to the 2600 block of Mango Circle NW just after 7:30 p.m. after reports of shots being fired. They learned the boy was driven to the hospital by a neighbor.

Witnesses at the scene tell FOX 5 News that a car pulled up to the area and opened fire. They say the boy, who was in the middle of the street, was struck by one of the stray bullets.

Family members say the child underwent surgery and is recovering at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Police say they hope to have information on a suspect soon.
