Double stabbing at senior living facility; Woman, 75, dies

ATLANTA -

A 75-year-old woman is dead after a man stabbed her to death and left another man critically injured in southwest Atlanta late Monday night.

It happened about 11 p.m. at the Baptist Towers Apartments, a senior living facility in the 1800 block of Myrtle Drive, off of Alison Court.  Atlanta police say 64-year-old Geary Otis stabbed Mary Oliver, 75, in one location and then stabbed a 71-year-old man in another location.

Atlanta Police Sgt. Ricardo Vazquez said, "We definitely have two separate scenes, so the evidence does suggest that the stabbings took place at two separate locations inside of the building."

Officers responding to the attack say they found Otis covered in blood and carrying two large kitchen knives. Police arrested him, noticing that he'd sustained lacerations to his face and chest. Otis was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, police said.

Police say Otis lived at Baptist Towers and likely knew his victims, but was not in any type of relationship with either. While a motive in the attacked is unconfirmed, police are ruling out any romantic or domestic factors.

Oliver, who also lived at Baptist Towers, would have celebrated her 76th birthday on Tuesday.

"They called me and told me something had happened with my mom," said Ellen Hall-Varner, Oliver's daughter. "The police and crime scene is here and that I need to get here as soon as possible."

She said, "One of the ladies came out that live across the hall from my mother and tell me that she… you know, my mother was hollering for help when the guy kicked the door in. And, he started stabbing her and, you know, she was calling for somebody to help her."

"My mother had no business dying no tragic death," said Jan Jacobs. "And then, for you to kick in her door to kill her, I don't understand that. That's now the way senior citizen's are supposed to die."

Once discharged from the hospital, Otis is expected to be held at the Fulton County Jail. He's charged with murder and aggravated assault, police said.
