College Park fire forces residents from their homes

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -

College Park firefighters are stamping out hotspots after knocking down an early morning fire at an apartment complex on Camp Creek Parkway.

The Battalion Chief says the fire broke out about 4:30 a.m. Thursday and eventually triggered a total evacuation of all residents from the apartment building. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and smoke streaming out of the upper levels of the multi-story building.
 
Quick action by the firefighters allowed them to quickly wrest the flames under control, containing the brunt of the damage to the apartment where the fire started. The College Park Battalion Chief said at least two other apartments sustained fire- and smoke-related damage – but, were still inhabitable.

Authorities weren't certain how many residents were forced from their homes, but did report that no one was injured. There was no official word on when it would be safe for them to return to their apartments.

A mother living in the apartment where the fire started said she awoke to the smell of smoke and began checking each room in her home. When she reached her young son's bedroom, she said she didn't see any flames but did smell smoke. She said it appeared the smoke was coming from her son's closet.

Both were able to safely get out of their apartment.

Fire officials have not confirmed what sparked the fire.
