Temp workers taking up larger part of workforce

Temp workers taking up larger part of workforce

ATLANTA -

While the country's job growth may have disappointed most, temporary jobs have grown at a rapid rate since the recession.

The Associated Press reports that about 12 percent of all jobs are made of contractors, consultants and freelance workers.

Sarina Moore, 26, is a pre-closing loan manager at Crescent Mortgage Company. While she is a temporary worker, Moore enjoys the salary and benefits she desired.

"Currently, I don't see any difference because of the way I am treated. I'm treated just like a permanent employee," she said.

Sarina lost a job at the height of the recession, and noticed that mortgage companies hired more through temp agencies, so she decided to work it to her advantage.

"When I came into this position, I knew exactly what I would be doing, what the salary would be," said Moore. "I was offered benefits. So, it put me in a situation where I was able to have more control."

Sarina was hired through TRC Staffing Services. Senior vice president Tom Bodeep says working professionals increasingly accept their new roles as free agents in the business world.

"They're less reliant on the company that says, ‘We're going to chart out a 30-year career for you.' And oh by the way you've got companies that are not as apt to do that anymore as they used to. That old contract has gone by the wayside," Bodeep said.

Bodeep says more and more companies use temp workers in jobs that have been traditionally permanent. He says it's partly due to new employer mandates like Obamacare.

"They're going to have to fund that expense and they're concerned about that," Bodeep said. "We're seeing a lot of those companies in that range looking more at temporary help or long-term temporary help or contract labor as an alternative to hiring permanently."

According to the Associated Press, there are about 17 million freelancers, contract workers and consultants. The number of temp workers has also jumped more than 50 percent since the recession ended four years ago.
