Fire sparked by lightning destroys Johns Creek home

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -

Fast-moving flames destroyed a Johns Creek home after apparently it was apparently struck by lightning on Wednesday.

No one was injured in the blaze at a home on Donnington Drive.

A resident said that he and another man rushed out of the home after hearing the lightning strike, which he said sounded "like a bomb."

Quick-moving flames spread throughout the home, causing most of its roof to collapse.

A neighbor, Sachin Sangole, said that the lightning strike caused lights to flutter in his home.

"I was really worried was it going to spread, is there going to be more lightning. I didn't know what was going to happen," Sangole said.

Firefighters said that the storm passed quickly, easing fears of more lightning strikes. Residents said that help arrived within minutes, but the fire was already too big to handle.

"We did have a large amount of fire. We did try to do an aggressive interior attack, but unfortunately the fire was too far ahead of us and we had a partial collapse, so our crews had to pull out," said Division Chief Chad McGiboney of the Jones Creek Fire Department.

The collapse meant a total loss which caught the residents off guard.

"Honestly we didn't think it was going to be this bad, so we didn't save much because we didn't think any of this was going to happen," said one resident of the burned home.

Firefighters said that the home was a total loss. The displaced residents will have to stay with relatives.
