Schoep and John beat the odds. This brave pup, a bit on in years, suffered from severe arthritis. His owner, John Unger, tried a new technique of taking Schoep to float in Lake Superior every evening.

John held Schoep in his arms, with his pup's head upon his chest and let the dog's lower body coast along the lake waters. The floating alleviated the pressure placed upon Schoep's legs that would aggravate his arthritis.

John's friend took a photo of the two during one of their therapy sessions – and, the photo went viral. More than 2.2 million animal lovers from around the world commented on the photo posted at the Schoep and John Facebook page. The page totaled more than 188,000 likes.

An amazing story of man's best friend, John rescued Schoep about 20 years ago. The two have been together ever since. Their time together ended Wednesday, when Schoep passed.

John announced Schoep's passing by posting a paw print photo from Schoep and these words:
"I Breathe But I Can't Catch My Breath... Schoep passed yesterday."
