Apartments evacuated after building foundation erodes

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

This weekend's storms forced residents at a Cobb County apartment complex out of their homes.

The foundation of the building at the Ivy Ridge Apartments washed away.

Firefighters evacuated the apartments over concerns the building might collapse.

Residents had hoped to grab their belongings on Monday, but they were not allowed back in. Authorities said the building is still unsafe and no one will be permitted inside until it passes inspection.

Sherry Faye and her 18-year-old daughter were among dozens of residents forced to evacuate their homes on Saturday with only their clothes on their backs.

"They kept telling me that there was a sinkhole in the building and everybody had to evacuate, so we all ran out," said Faye.

Apartment officials said they had a structural engineer out at the apartments, but there has been word on the next step.

County officials said that once the problem is fix, the building will be inspected. Until then, the building must remain vacant.

Faye said that she and her daughter are staying at a nearby motel with the assistance of Red Cross, but they say time and money are running out.

"We have to be out Tuesday and we don't know where we are going," Faye said.
