Flash flood creates scare at kid's birthday party

SMYRNA, Ga. -

A flash flood turned a kid's birthday party into a rescue mission in Smyrna on Saturday. Children had to be pulled to safety as water rushed into the family's home.

The Richardson family was holding a party to celebrate their son's third birthday. More than 50 people were in attendance when a sudden storm flooded the stream next to their home.

"It just came so fast that we didn't know what to do. We were swimming in it," said Brandi Richardson. "It just crashed into the house and it started leaking in from everywhere."

When the rain started falling, they moved the kids inside – and then the water crashed in.

"We started passing the children up. The moms were passing the children up from the basement because the water was just rushing in," said Brandi Richardson.

The floodwater picked up cars and moved furniture.

"I started beating on the door…and then it hit, pushed me against the door," Terry Richardson said. "It filled up in 30 seconds."

Terry Richardson had just converted the basement into an office for his appraisal business. It was left a mess by waist-deep waters.

During the storm, a culvert collapsed and ended up acting like a damn. At that point, debris started piling up, making the situation even worse

Brandi Richardson said that now she won't even let her son stay at home over for fear that it could all happen again.

"If we get any more rain, I don't know what's going to happen. The yard is falling in up at the top of the road, so we're terrified," said Brandi Richardson.

The family said they are working with the city of Smyrna to make sure the culvert gets fixed.
