2 Fulton Co. Jail employees accused of smuggling phones to inmates

Posted: Updated:
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Two female Fulton County Jail officers are out of a job as an investigation looks deeper into how cell phones are being smuggled to inmates.

On Tuesday, FOX 5's Morse Diggs reported that numerous phones and weapons were found in a recent jail raid. Sources tell Diggs that at least one female detention officer has been romantically linked to an inmate.

A supervisor would not confirm details of the ongoing investigation, but explained that lives could be placed in jeopardy if a prison gets a phone.

"They're an extreme threat. If an inmate knows his schedule to go to court, if he knows the route that the transfer is going to take him to court, and he relays that information by cell phone to those who would wish to free him, then that presents a danger to our transfer staff," said Lt. D. Cochran of the Fulton County Sheriff's Department.

Fulton County Commissioner Rob Pitt said he was able to confirm what law enforcement sources have told FOX 5. Two female Fulton officers were recently let go in connection with the phone investigation. At least one is said to have had a personal romantic involvement with one of the inmates.

"I mean, that's the only way for an inmate to have access to these things that are illegal, Pitts said. "I mean, it will have to be from an employee, someone on the inside or someone coming in to visit who somehow gets these things through security."

FOX 5 is awaiting confirmation before releasing names of the officers who were let go.
