Woman electrocuted by downed power line in Ellijay

ELLIJAY, Ga. -

A 19-year-old woman died after being electrocuted during a thunderstorm in Ellijay on Wednesday, authorities said.

Authorities said that Stephanie Diaz went outside to see why the power was out at the house she was babysitting. She stepped on the wet ground and was killed by electricity from a downed power line that was still energized.

Ellijay officer Alan Henson was first to arrive after a neighbor called 911. He and other emergency responders had to wait for the electric line to be deactivated before they could approach the scene.

"The power line was burning and arcing and could not get over to help her until the power was cutoff," Henson said. "It's one of the worst feelings you can ever have is knowing there is someone there needing help that is down and there is no way to get to them.

Stephanie lived a few miles away. Relatives say she was a recent graduate of Gilmer County High School.

"She was a good-hearted person and tried her best to make everybody happy," said Diaz' father, Rogelio (translated through her brother Christian). "The night before she tried convincing us to try our best and told us you never know when it's going to be your last day and the next day it was."

Her family says the young woman's funeral service will be held Saturday in north Georgia.

Police say the tragic incident serves as a reminder to never approach a fallen power line, and stay in your car if an electric line comes down near your vehicle.
