Officer removed from K-9 duty after death of dog

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -

A Woodstock police officer has been removed from K-9 duty after his dog died in his patrol car.

Spartacus, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, was found dead in his Officer Chad Berry's patrol car last month.  A necropsy later determined that Spartacus died of a heat stroke, according to the police department.

Investigations by the Pickens County Sheriff's Office and Woodstock Police Departments showed that there was no intent to harm the dog.

Berry told investigators that he had left Spartacus in his car as he attended to his children.  The delay in getting the dog out resulted in his death, according to investigators.

The Pickens County Sheriff's Office issued a cruelty to animal citation to Berry for leaving an animal attended in a parked vehicle without proper ventilation.  Berry paid a fine of $325.

In addition to being removed from the K-9 program, Berry was suspended without pay for 10 days for violating department policies governing the responsibilities of canine handlers.

Berry, a 9-year veteran of the Woodstock Police Department, is now assigned to the traffic enforcement unit, according to the department.
