Suwanee dedicates 9/11 memorial

SUWANEE, Ga. -

A metro Atlanta community marked the anniversary of 9/11 with a permanent tribute.  The dedication of the "Remembrance" display took place on Wednesday night at Suwanee's Town Center Park.

The 9/11 memorial was created by Statesboro artist Marc Molton in tribute to the thousands who lost their lives in a horrific act of terrorism.

The 1,600 pound piece of twisted medal incorporate part of an exterior panel recovered from one of Twin Towers into the display. It was given to the city by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Angela Lee was one of hundreds of who visited the site on Wednesday. She was joined by her 8-year-old Preston. For Angela, the display was deeply personal.

Lee's thoughts were of her brother, New York firefighter Keithroy Maynard. He was one of the first responders who perished in the World Trade Center.

"His station house was in Manhattan. His house was one of the first that made it up there," Lee said.

Lee, who was in New York for the 10th anniversary of the attacks, said she's proud of her community for honoring her brother and others.

"It's really good to have someplace to just come and reflect on a day like today," Lee said.

Lee said Keithroy Maynard was a twin. After his death, his twin brother became a firefighter to honor his late brother.
