Carter Center to monitor election in Nepal

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - The Carter Center has launched an election observation mission for a constituent assembly election in Nepal.

The center says it's sending international observers for the Nov. 19 election at the invitation of election officials in Nepal. The center observed Nepal's 2008 constituent assembly election and has conducted long-term political and constitutional monitoring.

The center this past week sent 12 long-term observers across Nepal. It put teams in the five development regions and a roaming team in the Terai region. They will gather firsthand knowledge of the activities of the election commission, political parties, civil society organizations, and the international community, as well as other citizen and international election observation missions.

The 12 observers represent eight countries and will be joined by an additional 40 short-term observers shortly before the elections.
