ATLANTA -

Family and friends of Civil Rights matriarch Evelyn Lowery will pay their final respects to her on this morning.

The wife of Rev. Joseph Lowery for the last 68 years, Evelyn Lowery became a powerful force for change in her own right. It is this force and her effective change that will be at the center of her home-going celebration at Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College.

Lowery was the founder of SCLC/Women, Inc. the sister organization to the historic civil rights organization, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the creator of the annual Drum Major of Justice Awards that is held annually in April in Atlanta.

Many remembered her during a public viewing at Cascade United Methodist Church on Monday as not just for her civil and voting rights efforts, but also for her opening doors for women.

Mrs. Lowery suffered a stroke earlier this month, and she passed away last week.  She was 88 years old.

There will be a viewing from 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., followed by a celebration at 11 a.m.
