Hot Topic: Should officers be fired for cursing?

Massachusetts wants to do away with foul-mouthed police officers. A proposed law could punish officers for swearing or using racial slurs in public.

FOX News reports this week that the bill dubbed "An Act to prohibit inappropriate language use by sworn law officers" was introduced to that state's legislative committees. Supporters say that public servants shouldn't act in such an unprofessional manner and that the behavior is "beneath the dignity" of sworn officers. They say the bill would help reinforce good police practices and would remove officers from service if they continue to violate the law.

The executive director of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association calls it "radical legislation" that is too broadly written and says it is a "very aggressive remedy for a situation that may not be as severe as projected here." Others in opposition of the bill say that they would hate to see good officers fired over one bad word.
