Rep. John Lewis recounts shooting, lockdown

ATLANTA (AP) - U.S. Congressman John Lewis says he was walking down the steps of the Capitol building when shots rang out and he was ordered back inside by police.

In an interview with WYAY-FM in Atlanta Thursday, Lewis said was nearly at the bottom of the building when police chasing a woman who rammed a car into a gate near the White House told him to go back inside.

Lewis said the shots sounded like they were coming from the area near the office building he was walking toward.

Lewis, who represents Atlanta and some surrounding areas, says he helped a pregnant staffer back inside the Capitol, where they waited during a lockdown.

Police fatally shot the woman driving the car and took a child who was with her into protective custody.
