Woman suffers serious burns saving grandchildren

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -

A Waleska woman remains in critical condition after rescuing her three grandchildren from their burning home on Saturday.

Authorities say 66-year-old Christine Phyfe has first, second and third-degree burns on her head and back.

Friend Darryl Puckett said the farm house was more than 100 years old. Puckett said he spent much of his childhood at the house.

"Just sadness and disappointment that this home that has been in our family so long is gone, and our thoughts are with the people that got hurt, we're thinking about them," Puckett said.

The house belonged to Puckett's parents, who rented it to Phyfe and her husband.

Phyfe suffered horrible burns after racing in the burning home to get her three grandchildren.

"Houses can be rebuilt, furniture can be re-bought, but we're more concerned about her and how she's doing than all this mess," Puckett said.

Family members say that Phyfe is in serious but stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. Her daughter told FOX 5 that doctors plan to operate on Phyfe on Monday, starting the first round of skin grafts. All that's known for sure is that the road ahead will be a long one.

Officials have not determined the cause of the fire. Investigators will return to the house on Tuesday in search of answers.

An account has been set up at Wells Fargo bank to take donations for Christine Phyfe.
