Holiday layaway options: What you should know

Holiday layaway options: What you should know

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Layaway is back for the holidays, but this year, there are some changes.  FOX 5 I-Team reporter Dana Fowle got the scoop on how big box retailers have tweaked their programs.

At many places, it's now cheaper to use the layaway program, but the deadlines for paying off your balance are tighter.

Walmart:
Great news!  The $10 fee Walmart use to charge for their layaway service is gone.  But-- you have to get your items off of layaway by December 13.  If you don't, your order will be canceled and you'll be docked $10.  To start layaway at Walmart, you'll have to put money down on your purchase (10 percent or $10 depending on which is greater).

Sears:
Their free layaway window wrapped up over the weekend.  Now, there's a $5 fee.  Sears has differing rules depending on whether or not you are putting items away online or in-store.  Fees also depend on whether you use an eight-week payoff, or a 12-week payoff, so make sure you read the rules carefully.

Toys "R" Us:
They advertise free layaway, and it's very similar to Walmart's program.  There is no fee, and a $10 down payment.  Final pickup is December 15.

These layaway options are great for the budget-savvy crowd, and buying gifts this way can be a perfect way to stay on budget.

Here are links to the layaway options we feature in this story, including the Atlanta BBB's guide to layaway shopping:

Here's the sure fire way to stay on budget at the grocery store: Plan your menu in advance, make a list then stick to it. So how is it that you're still spending more than you should and ending up with less than you need? Because too many of us shop at the wrong time.

A credit card balance can easily get out of control. You can chip away at that debt by transferring the balance to a lower interest card.  But, before you jump on that great offer, hit 'pause'. It's not for everyone.
