Police: Mother of 10 intentionally run over, killed by driver

ATLANTA -

Police say a man intentionally ran over a mother of 10 and killed her Sunday night in southeast Atlanta.  Investigators say 53-year-old Marilyn Redding had just left the corner store near Boulevard and Gartrell Street around 5:30 p.m. when she was hit by a man they say she knew.

They say she was walking along the sidewalk when a man driving a PT Cruiser ran her over.

Family members say Redding was a mother of 10 and a grandmother to several more children.

Members of the Edgewood community pulled the man, 63-year-old Alex Mason, from the vehicle and held him until police arrived at the scene.  Police are investigating a possible motive, but they say there was some sort of altercation before Redding was hit, and that they knew each other.

Mason faces aggravated assault and murder charges. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he spent the night.  He was transferred to the Fulton County Jail on Monday morning.  He's being held on aggravated assault and murder charges. He is scheduled for his first court appearance Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Redding's ex-husband, Kenny Redding, told FOX 5 he can't imagine what his ex-wife could possibly have done that would have led to the deadly altercation.  He says he's grateful to those who witnessed what happened, and held Mason at the scene until police arrived.
