Detention facility in Gainesville to close

Posted: Updated:

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - The private owner of a downtown Gainesville detention center has announced plans to close the facility before the end of the year.

Corrections Corps of America spokesman, Steven Owen, told the Gainesville Times Monday ( ) that the firm has seen a population decline at the North Georgia Detention Center, which houses mostly immigration detainees.

This summer CCA officials told city council the center was housing nearly 190 people when its capacity is 502.

Owen says authorities will likely begin transferring detainees to other detention facilities.

Owen says employees at the facility will be offered jobs at other CCA facilities. He says workers who are unable to relocate will receive help from the firm to find jobs in the local area.
