Victims of crime remembered in Gwinnett County

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

A local community came together on Tuesday to remember victims of crime.

For the last 12 years at Christmas, the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office has remembered those whose lives were lost in the past year.

Commissioner Avery Niles reminded those gathered at the event that every life was important.

"A village never forgets because each and every member is special," Niles said. "Each and every member has a special spirit, a special energy, gift or purpose."

One of the homicides that affected many people this year was the death of 10-year-old Emani Moss. The body of the young girl was discovered in a garbage can outside of a Lawrenceville apartment. Police said she died of starvation. Authorities have charged the girl's father and stepmother, Eman and Tiffany Moss, with murder and child cruelty in Emani's death. Investigators said that Emani suffered years of abuse before her death.

Moss' grandmother and about two dozen family members all attended Tuesday's remembrance. They said the service touched them.

"It makes me feel good because she should never be forgotten," said Robin Moss, Emani's grandmother. "Not one child -- not one person should ever be forgotten."

Emani's grandmother said that Christmas is one of the toughest times of the year,

"It's always me and her, so we did everything," said Robin Moss. "She got a chance to shop like she was crazy and so did it I. It's difficult because it is the loving time of year honestly."

Seven "Crime Victim Remembrance Trees" filled the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. They featured each victim with ornaments and pictures. Organizers said the decoration represents the continuation of the spirits that were lost.

Robin Moss said Emani had only two things on her Christmas list last year: a book and to spend time with her grandmother.
