DECATUR, Ga. -

An icon of Atlanta marked a major milestone birthday Sunday with an evening of praise and celebration.

The humanitarian affectionately known as Mother Hughes celebrated her 100th birthday at the Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Decatur.

"We were believing that this day would come and 99 1/2 just won't do. She wanted to make it to a 100," said Dr. Herbert Bridgewater, her son.

The humanitarian affectionately known as Mother Hughes celebrated her 100th birthday at the Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Decatur. The church honored her with a concert to mark a life well lived.

"The more God gives to you and if you can help someone, your living will not be in vein," said Mother Mary Hughes.

Hughes, known as a one-woman missionary and humanitarian, has spent her life quietly serving those in need in her community.
