Spelman president receives Carnegie Corp. award

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - The president of Spelman College has been awarded a national academic leadership honor from the Carnegie Corp.

Beverly Tatum is one of four college presidents named as a recipient of the honor. Tatum is also the first president of a Historically Black College or University, and the first college president from Georgia to be given the award.

Carnegie's award recognized college presidents for resourcefulness, innovation, international engagement and more.

Tatum told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution she'll use half the $500,000 award toward a matching grant to establish a computer science faculty position at the school. Tatum says she'll use the other half of the money to bolster a safety net fund for students facing financial hardships.

Presidents of Duke, Arizona State and Stanford University were also given the award.
