Family of Kendrick Johnson calls for investigation

ATLANTA -

The family of Kendrick Johnson is asking for an investigation into the funeral home who handled their son's body.

The 17-year-old Valdosta teen was found dead inside of a wrestling mat at Lowndes County High School in January. The death was initially ruled an accident, but the family never agreed with that assessment. They eventually exhumed his body for a second autopsy, which found evidence of foul play.

That post-exhumation autopsy also reportedly found the teen's organ's missing and his body stuffed with newspaper.

"We were thinking we buried out son, but we only buried half of our son," said Kenneth Johnson, Kendrick's father.

Paperwork filed on Tuesday with the Secretary of State asked that office to investigate what happened to Kendrick's missing organs, specifically targeting the funeral that handled his body. They're also urging Gov. Nathan Deal to appoint an independent coroner as well as a new coroner's investigation to look into the evidence they say is missing from this case, such as Johnson's fingernails and his clothes. The family believes that these new probes will find their son's death was a murder that was covered up.

"Somebody knows what happened, and we're going to solve this murder mystery, one way or another," said Benjamin Crump, the family's attorney.

A rally is scheduled on Wednesday morning to mark the 11-month anniversary of Johnson's death. It will be held at the Georgia Capitol.
