72 Year Old Woman Scares off Gunman with Unlikely Object

Posted: Updated:

With a gun held to her head the 72 year old office manager never lost her cool.

She was unarmed and unable to give the man the money he demanded, so she found the next best thing.

Arnold says: "Three times he hit me in the head with the gun and said he wanted the money."

It's not unusual to see Cheryl Arnold behind the desk at Vista Village apartments' management office. She's worked there on and off for 20 years.

But today was a little different.

Arnold says: "This young person came in and he had a mask on his face, covering his nose and mouth and he came over to the side of the desk and said, 'I'm not kidding' and held a gun to my head."

Arnold took advantage of a fleeting moment of confusion for the armed suspect as he paced around the room trying to unlock the safe.

Arnold says: "He pulled the drawer open and looked. And there wasn't anything in it. Then he walked around to the front of the desk and I grabbed the fire extinguisher and blasted him with it and kept shooting at it and the whole room was covered with the fire extinguisher dust and he ran out the door."

Arnold says it's no accident that the extinguisher was under her desk.

The extinguisher sales man left an extra for this exact scenario.

Arnold says: "I said I don't carry a gun, and he said 'well I have something that you can use that will be just as good. He said keep it next to your desk and if you ever need, just blast him with it because that'll do it."

But it was an unsettling scene for residents, especially Keith Calloway. He is moving in to vista village today.

Calloway says: "Well I wasn't pleased to see a whole bunch of police cars out front. Kind of was disturbing to find that this is the kind of atmosphere that I'm moving in to. It would be more the type of atmosphere that I would be moving away from or not existing in at all."

Calloway says he hopes this is an isolated incident.  But commend Arnold on her efforts to keep the man away.

CALLOWAY says: "Kudos, great job. Great job.  Hey, somebody wants to take something for nothing. They don't deserve anything. He deserved what he got. He deserves to be in jail."
