ATLANTA -

Metro Atlanta experienced record low temperatures on Tuesday.

FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Jeff Hill said temperatures tumbled to 6 degrees in Atlanta, breaking the record of 10 from 1970.

Highs on Tuesday were set to only reach the mid-20s. Temperatures will finally rise above freeze around noon on Wednesday, Hill said.

A wind chill advisory was in effect for most of the metro Atlanta area earlier in the day. Residents were warmed to limit  time outside in the overnight and early morning hours. When going outside, dress in warm layers and cover all exposed skin.

The frigid weather is slowing down MARTA's rail service. The transit system said that trains will run slower than usual Tuesday morning because of the extreme cold. When the temperatures rise, the trains will get back to normal speed. MARTA said there may also be some delays in the bus service.

Some folks in the North Georgia mountains got a light dusting of snow on Monday morning. (SEE PHOTOS HERE) Most of that white stuff had melted by late afternoon, but residents prepared for another night of freezing temperatures.

Some accidents were reported on roads in Gilmer County, but there were no major problems.

Polk County residents are under a boil water advisory after a pump failure at the Deaton Spring Water Facility, according to the Polk County Water Authority. Water customers are asked to conserve water until the system is repaired.

TIPS: How to protect your car from the cold weather

A winter blast left some folks waking up to snow in parts of Georgia on Friday. Several areas saw a light dusting; the white stuff even coated the ground in some communities for a few hours.
