GDOT, state leaders prepare for winter weather

ATLANTA -

State leaders say they are prepared for the approaching winter storm.

FOX 5 spoke with leaders who say a plan has been put into place to combat the snow and ice. Leaders have acknowledged that mistakes were made a couple of weeks ago and they say they've learned their lesson from those mistakes and they vow not to have a repeat.

GDOT has replenished their salt and sand supply but they say more is on the way. But concerns remain high, because of the possibility of significant accumulations of ice this week.

The state has activated its Operations Center in advance of the storm. People were urged to go home early Monday, to clear the way for highway crews. GDOT officials say clear streets are critical in order to make way for workers to "get out there and do what needs to be done".

In addition, tractor trailers, which caused many of the problems in the last storm, are being urged to avoid Atlanta roads altogether during the winter weather.
