University officials said the man who was killed after an exchange of gunfire with police during an incident at an apartment complex on the campus of Columbus State University on Sunday was prompted by a report that the man was seen loading a gun.

Police said they responded to Columbus State University's Courtyard 1 North apartment complex on the main campus just after 2:30 p.m. Sunday. They say the man took off on foot once police approached him. After a brief chase, police say he turned towards them after turning a corner during the foot chase and opened fire. The man ended up being shot after a brief exchange of fire.

The man was transport to Midtown Medical Center. Officials later confirm the man died as a result of his injuries.

No other injuries were reported during the incident.

Columbus State University Police Chief Rus Drew said officers were able to determine the man was not a student there.

The name of the man has not yet been released, but the Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that the man was 20 years old.

"This is a terrible tragedy. We will cooperate fully with the investigation by GBI. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this, as well as their families," Columbus State University President Tim Mescon stated in a release sent to FOX 5 News on Sunday.
