ATLANTA, Ga. -

MARTA officials confirm a visually impaired man fell onto the tracks at a downtown MARTA station Tuesday evening.

The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. at the Civic Center MARTA station.

According to officials with MARTA, the visually impaired rider was waiting on a Northbound train. He heard the Southbound train pull up and thought it was the train he was waiting on. He stepped off the platform and fell several feet to the tracks below.

Passengers on the platform yelled for help and an arriving train stopped.

They say the man is alive and was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Fire officials could not immediately comment on the man's condition but MARTA officials say this was a very close call.

Rail service was suspended through the station during the rescue.

MARTA officials tell FOX 5 they have measures in place at every station to help visually impaired riders. They are investigating the incident.
